Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Club Hikes - October 2009

While no specific jobs had been identified at the time the hike schedule was prepared, experience has shown that there is always lots to do. Come on out and give us a hand. If you plan on taking part

Saturday, October 3  -  Time: 7:30 sharp (Note early start!)
We will carpool to Cyprus Lake, to explore the beautiful Bruce Peninsula. High-lights include: Rock-Scrabble side-trail, Half-way Rock, Grotto, Overhanging Point and Boulder Beach. Terrain is rugged, hiking challenging, BUT the scenery is awesome! Sturdy over-the ankle boots recommended. Dress in layers for cold/wind/rain. (keep some reserve clothing in your pack). Bring lunch and water. NOTE: Moderate car pool fee will apply. Return around 6pm or later. Participants are asked to contact Ray by Thursday prior to the hike.

Level of difficulty: Intermediate - strenuous.

Wednesday October 7, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to Lavender, leave cars and then proceed to km 42.8 where the trail intersects Prince of Wales Rd. We will hike the last 11 km of the Dufferin Highlands section. We will walk through the woods and meadows of the Mulmur Hills and finish at the cemetery, ½ Km from Lavender (km 53.8). Bring water and snacks/lunch.

Saturday, October 10, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to the parking area at km 59.4 of the Blue Mountains Section. We will start on the Petun Side Trail and join the main trail at km 53.4. Then we continue  on the main trail to km 50.0, surmounting the highest elevation on the Bruce Trail, after which, we take the John Haig Side Trail to km 55.5, from where we follow the 2nd Line back to the parking lot at Grey 19. Bring water and a lunch.

Wednesday October 14, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We carpool to km 16.4 of the Blue Mountains section and follow the main trail south to km 8.5, where the hike will terminate. The trail passes through open fields, bush and hardwood with some interesting rock formations and crevices. Following the hike there will be an optional lunch in Singhampton. Bring water and a snack.

Saturday October 17, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to the parking area on Concession Rd 4 South in the Spey River Forest Area, km 18.9 in the Sydenham Section. We will then proceed west up a hill to the Big Head Campsite area. From here we will traverse open country to the Spey River Forest which leads to the Hoath Head Marsh where the hike will end on 6 Sideroad. Bring lunch and beverages.

Wednesday October 21, 2009  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will carpool to the parking lot at Eugenia Falls, leave a car and then proceed to Hogg’s Falls to start our hike at km 62.3. We will hike north to Eugenia Falls through mainly forested area with a long climb at the end. We will take time to view the waterfalls at each end of the hike. Bring water and a snack.

Saturday Oct. 24, 2009  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will car pool to km 105.2 of the Beaver Valley Section.  To begin our hike we go west across the height of land that separates the Beaver River Valley and Bighead River Valley. The trail meanders through cultivated fields and hardwood bush with great views to the north. The hike terminates at Blantyre. Bring water and a lunch.

Wednesday October 28, 2009  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will carpool to Glen Huron to commence the hike along the Mad River Valley. We will proceed west along the trail to the Devils Glen Ski Club area. We then proceed past this area to a long and gradual uphill trail to the top of the escarpment. We follow the trail back to the intersection of the Ganaraska Trail and back to the village of Glen Huron. This is a beautiful hike in the Mad River canyon with cliffs on all sides. Bring a lunch and beverages.

Saturday October 31, 2009  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will carpool to the Beaver Valley Lookout on route 13, leave a car and then proceed to the parking lot at Eugenia Falls, km 55.6 of the Beaver Valley Section. From here we make our way north, along a new section of the Beaver Valley extension and at km 47.6 we leave the trail. We will continue, with great views, along route 13 back to the Beaver Valley Lookout. Bring water and a lunch.
