Blue Mountains Bruce Trail Club Hikes - September 2009


Wednesday, September 2, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to The Falls Inn at Walters Falls to begin a loop hike along the river and through the surrounding woods. There are some steep, but short ascents. The hike can be extended to 7 or 8 km depending on weather and group enthusiasm. Bring water and a snack. There will be the option of a lunch at the Falls Inn after the hike.

Wednesday September 9, 2009  -  Time: 9.00 am
We will carpool to Km 93.3 on Sideroad 22C on the west side of the Beaver Valley. We will traverse the Fairmont Side Trail, sections of the Bruce Trail and the Siegerman Side Trail to return to the start point. This is a very scenic hike with hilly areas and some steeper ascents. Bring water and a lunch.

Saturday, September 12, 2009 and Sunday, September 13, 2009
Two Hikes on the Bruce Peninsula - (To register for this hike, call or e-mail Rosemary or Herman before Tuesday, Sept. 8. For overnight accommodation suggestions, contact hike leaders.)
The Saturday hike  -  Time: 06:30 am (note early start time and different meeting location)
We will meet at the Craigleith General Store on hwy 26. We will drive up to Ferndale, stop for a bite and our hike will start at Cape Chin North Road parking at km 106.7. From here the hike will take us north with many lookouts over Dyers Bay. We will see the Devil’s Monument on the way to Km 120.3, then turn south crossing alvar on the Juniper Flats Sidetrail. We finish the longer hike at the road parking at km116.8. Shorter hikes can be arranged, depending on the availability of cars. Bring water, lunch and good footwear.

The Sunday Hike (Jackson/Rush Cove Area)  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will meet at the parking lot at Jackson Cove Rd Km 52.8. From here we will hike north on the main trail with great lookouts over Georgian Bay and through Alvar areas, before we take the ladder down to the shoreline of Rush Cove and return to the starting point via the Pease Side Trail and the Jackson Cove Side Trail. A shorter hike can be arranged, depending on the availability of cars. This would also start at km 52.8, include Rush Cove and end at the parking lot at km 59.1. Bring water, lunch and good footwear.

Wednesday September 16, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to km 10.4 of the Blue Mountains section and follow the main trail south into the Noisy River Valley. We then make our way through mixed bush up out of the valley to the top of the escarpment. We follow the escarpment edge past some interesting crevices and rock formations to km 0.0 where the hike will terminate. At the conclusion of the hike we will head to an appropriate location for lunch and refreshments. Bring water and snack.

Saturday September 19, 2009  -  Time: 8:00 am (Note early meeting time)
We will carpool to an area north of Owen Sound and start our hike at km 130.2 (Sydenham Section). From here we hike north to km 146.2 where the hike will end. Bring water and snacks/lunch.

Wednesday September 23, 2009  -  Time: 9:30 am
We will carpool to the parking area at County Road 18 below Castle Glen. We will then proceed north along the main trail to the Scenic Caves area and then proceed along the new reroute in the Blue Mountains ski club area to Swiss Meadows where the hike will end. This hike has many scenic views of the bay area along the way. Bring a lunch and beverages.

Saturday September 26, 2009  -  Time: 9:00 am
We will carpool to the skiers’ parking lot at Kolapore on Gray Road #2. We will hike the Paradise Highway/Church Trails which will complete the loop back to the parking area. Since we are hiking through hardwood forest the colours should be spectacular at this time of year. Bring water and snacks.

Wednesday September 30, 2009  -  Time: 9:00am
We carpool to Duncan parking lot at km 33.2 in the Beaver valley section. This is a loop hike and we will get fine views from Pinnacle Rock and Metcalf rock. We will walk first along the main trail and then along the Chuck Grant Side trail, eventually returning to the parking lot via the main trail. Bring water and a lunch.
